    IOPSA’s Free State plumbers’ evening was an enjoyable and educational experience for all

    The Institute of Plumbing South Africa (IOPSA)’s Free State plumbers’ evening, held at Berlesell in Bloemfontein on 18 May 2016, was a roaring success.

    The plumbers’ evenings, which are held on a regular basis by IOPSA around South Africa, provide plumbers with the opportunity to socialize with one another and, in this case, listen to those who ‘have been there’.

    Our Guest Speaker Mr Piet Naude, a plumber and business owner gave an informative talk about his experience in the industry.

    The evening was most informative highlighting changes in the Industry, protecting the plumber, CPD, re-branding, the insurance forum, the WPC 2016 and adding value to members along with other items.

    Great thanks are extended to our sponsors Heat Tech, DPI Plastics, Marley and Berlesell. Commendations to Tokkie of IOPSA Free State for her outstanding efforts!

    To all Regional Chairman, The Committee and loyal members of IOPSA

    May I begin by introducing myself.  My name is Lee Goldie and since 1987 have operated Drips plumbing in Cape Town.  Drips Plumbing is also a founder member of The Institute of Plumbing in S.A. (1988).

    Our Institute is a member of the World Plumbing Council (WPC) and importantly shares close ties with the World Health Organization (WHO).

    South Africa has been offered and accepted the honour of hosting a World Plumbing Council Conference in Cape Town in September 2016.

    Every 3 years this conference is held in major cities around the world attracting the most important and smartest people in our industry. Through workshops and interaction the delegates can pick and choose what is important to their business interests and ultimately to the benefit of your business.

    I have been to 5 conferences over 16 years and have built the foundations of my business on what I bring back from conference.  In addition to those benefits, I have made lifelong friends and forged alliances with like-minded individuals to share information and inspiration for the craft we practise.

    It is for these reasons that I justify the delegate fees (not to mention flights and accommodation!) and the 2 days or more I spend away from my business.

    Having the conference in South Africa is a fantastic opportunity to experience WPC.  IOPSA has put together a world class event, partnering with IMD events to deliver an unforgettable experience.  In addition to speakers and workshops there will be social events topped off by a Gala Dinner sponsored by Dawn Grohe Watertech.  As part of the conference there is an exhibition and skills simulation from the TVET colleges in Cape Town.  An international community plumbing challenge (CPC) will run simultaneously.

    Cape Town has so much to offer our visitors, so come and enjoy the internationally recommended hospitality of this unique city.

    This is a personal invite to join in this prestigious event.  See you in Cape Town!

    Regards

    Lee Goldie

    IOPSA (Institute of Plumbing South Africa) is the only institute in South Africa that provides a voice for plumbers by representing small and medium sized employers and contractors on a national basis. And, as such, the Institute is producing a pricing guide to help plumbers understand the value of their services.

    Representing the value proposition of the plumber
    The Institute actively engages with and has the support of the plumbing supply chain participants such as manufacturers, merchants and retailers who recognise that the fulfilment of the plumbing supply chain is through the plumbers.

    Why is IOPSA producing an industry pricing guide?
    Challenges facing the plumbing industry have created the need to change the industry and the mind-sets of individuals within it.

    The key challenges, such as a lack of qualified tradesman, development of historically disadvantaged tradesman and the use of non-approved products in the South African environment, have resulted in poor sanitation and infrastructure in South Africa. One of many factors that can be linked to this is the plumber’s lack of understanding of his/her value and how to run a sustainable business.

    In order to gauge the value of a plumber, the following aspects must be taken into consideration:

    Plumbing qualification levels, experience and skills;

    • Standard of living;
    • Cost of being in business;
    • Medical aid and pension funds;
    • Level playing field for all.
    These aspects will act as guidelines for evaluating the value of a plumber, which will help customers understand what they are paying for when they secure the services of a plumber, educate consumers and property owners on the value of plumbers, and increase access to plumbing services for the diverse population of South African consumers.

    IOPSA will be printing 3 000 copies of the pricing guide, which will be available at plumbing merchant stores and retail stories, and will be updated annually.
